Review of The Vanishing (1993) by Angel Marie Y — 23 May 2010
I love Jeff Bridges, I like Kiefer Sutherland, and I tolerate Sandra Bullock, but somehow this movie still didn't do anything for me. It was probably the AWFUL writing. This had some of the most ridiculous set-ups and plot holes that I've seen in a movie in a long time.
Also, the writer apparently has no clue how people behave in any real-life situation. And the ending was absolutely ridiculous. SPOILER: So, these people escape the clutches of the murderer by killing him.
Meanwhile, there is really no proof that he has killed anyone. Also, there is at least one witness (the killer's daughter) who knows these people were going to meet up with her father (the killer).
So how would they be able to just kill him and leave w/o ANYONE suspecting they killed this guy? After all, the daughter loved her dad and isn't going to believe that he was a murderer, so naturally she would be willing to tell the police that these people were going to meet her dad at his cabin and that they're obviously the ones that killed him.
I'm probably thinking way more than this movie wanted me to, but come on, it's obvious that they couldn't just kill Bridges and get away with it that easily. Also, Nancy Travis is an atrocious actress.
On the plus side, Jeff Bridges does a good job in this movie. It's just a shame that his talent was used for such a dumb movie.
