Review of The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006) by Andy M — 16 Dec 2007
I like John and Yoko swell, but I don't like this film. It spreads itself too thin trying to illustrate the history of Lennon's activism in conjunction with the state of the nation and the attempted deportation of him and Yoko.
Because of this, the film feels like a surface value telling of known history. In addition to that, the look of the film feels more suited to TV, though I shouldn't be too surprised since this is a VH1 Rockdoc's production.
Worse yet was the incredibly crass way they presented Lennon's murder at the end. Overall, the filmmakers should have been more ambitious in presenting a focused story of a former Beatle shedding his pop image and getting in trouble for it.
