Review of The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006) by James S — 10 Mar 2011
Any documentary can be made to have any message or emotional punch, given the near infinite video and audio combinations that can be created. Just as easily as this documentary painted Lennon as a perfect, near-messianic savior figure, a filmmaker could create a film that paints him in an equally negative light.
Therefore a historical documentary's rating must be discerned from the craft of the film-making. And while the film is well-made, it suffers strongly from a lack of focus. You get over an hour into the film before the first mention of the direct conflict between lennon and the gov't.
So, in conclusion. Good, but not great.
