Review of The Untouchables (1987) by Tom S — 23 Mar 2010
With his usual visual panache, director Brian DePalma tells the story of federal agent Elliot Ness (Kevin Costner) and his attempt to bring notorious crime lord Al Capone (Robert DeNiro) to justice. Despite taking quite a few liberties with the facts, this is an exciting gangster film with memorable performances.
De Niro makes Capone both funny and scary and Sean Connery shines as the gruff Irish cop recruited by Ness. Costner is effective as Ness, though perhaps a little too angelic in his crusade to wipe out corruption.
The whole thing has a nice period feel to it and there are several excellent action scenes to set the pulse racing.
