Review of The Untouchables (1987) by Sarah S — 16 Dec 2010
Brian De Palma... out of all of the great directors in the crime genre, De Palma's name sticks out as the director of films such as "The Untouchables" and "Scarface." "The Untouchables" is one of the defining films of the 1980's and one of the greatest crime films ever made! It paints a vivid and gruesome picture of Al Capone (an intimidating performance by Robert Deniro) and is ruthless mobsters, as well as one of Elliot Ness (Kevin Costner), the FBI agent who devoted himself to tracking Capone down.
Costner and Deniro give good performances, but the man to watch in the film is none other than Sean Connery, who is brilliant as always! The film was visually gorgeous, with sharp cinematography and elaborate set pieces (and, if I may add, plenty of bloody gangster violence to go around), and the script was witty, smart, and most of all compelling! De Palma had a gift, and it was shown in his masterpiece, "The Untouchables!".
