Review of The Untouchables (1987) by Jonny B — 18 Mar 2011
Fucking brilliant. We have a tight David Mamet script and almost too much style and masterful touches by DePalma who throws Dario Argento into a mobster film - stylistic blood everywhere, insane camera work, crazy angles, gorgeous lighting all the while Morricone's score is bouncy all over the place.
Sean Connery is brilliant; Kevin Costner plays a badass so well I forgive for him 'The Postman'; and De Niro as the bald-chubby Al Capone is tremendous. This is a film that is the mafia genre and a bit predicable with moral themes that ends up being overwhelmed by DePalma's masterful directing.
We need more movies like this. Up there with Kubrick's best work.
