Review of The Untouchables (1987) by Mikey M — 09 Apr 2011
As an impressionable young teenager, this was my favourite film. I've come a long way since then though and while I still have great respect for how stylish and quotable this film is (with some wonderfully cinematic set-pieces - like Capone's shaving scene, the train station ode to Potempkin or the service elevator scene) there are a couple of really hammy scenes that are sensationalised Hollywood guff e.
G. The roof chase and the - "Did it sound anything like that!" quip. I'm just not that sure I've fully understood DePalma since my tastes matured. I've seen a great many of his films and like a few of them (this, Scarface and Carrie), but considering how prolific he's been, there isn't a single film of his that strikes me as consistently brilliant.
What I can't complain about with The Untouchables however, is Morricone's sublime score, which sets the mood perfectly.
