Review of The Untouchables (1987) by Max H — 20 Feb 2012
Not even near the top DePalma film, its the type of movie thats just good enough to make you wish it were better. De Niro is very good, but it seems a bit too effortless, and Costner is dead weight on the screen.
Only Sean Connery and Andy Garcia truly break out from the disappointment acting-wise. De Palma has the look down obviously but the problem is some of the comic non-realities that can come when De Palma creates an entirely fictional piece.
Since this is based on true events, some of the scenes, like Costener and crew just carrying around guns and everyone just walking around as normal, adds a comic ridicolousness that takes us out of the experience.
It's a fun movie, but its nothing binding, unlike Blow Out, Dressed to Kill, Scarface, or even moments of The Black Dahlia.
