Review of The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) by James C — 11 Oct 2007
People are normal, flawed beings. They often fall prey to seduction and worldy pleasures rather than the true, substantial ones in life, such as meaningful relationships. The characters are afflicted with an "unbearable lightness" - or superficiality of being - that they struggle against until the very end.
The symbolism in the movie is excellent, as is the cinematography. The performances are perfect - Day-Lewis in particular - and the sex scenes erotic. I did not like the excessive running time or the lack of focus in some parts of the film.
