Review of The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) by Neal R — 20 Dec 2008
Being familiar with the literary and cinematic versions of a single work makes comparison inevitable. The greatness of Kundera's novel is not the story but in each character's thematic narrative.
Without these each character, and several pivotal scenes, are belied in their individual and emotional core. What's left is a decent enough film with a tremendous cast (Binoche and Olin are both suitably talented and gorgeous and Lewis is a great actor) but little cohesion and a story that, as Tereza would see it, is no different from many others.
