Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Kevin L — 10 Jul 2007
Miserable musical melodrama; I suppose the problem of musical drama (i.e. "how can I take this seriously when they keep bursting into song for no reason?") is attempted to be dealt with by having the characters sing all the time, regardless of how mundane the situation. Not that it really helps you take the story much more seriously. Regardless, it does gain points for not trying to tack on a happy Hollywood-esque ending.
The music, particularly the leitmotif, is fairly nice.
