Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Lauren R — 02 Sep 2007
I don't generally like musicals. It just jolts me into disbelief when characters suddenly break into song but Les Parapluies de Cherbourg is somehow very different. Perhaps it's because every single line is sung, perhaps it's because it's in French with its inherent lyrical sound, perhaps the ordinary conversational style and perfect memorable main themes.
I suspect it's all that plus the driving plot that many musicals lack. Every time I surf to this film on TV, I'm frozen and have to see it through the melancholic end.
