As sad and beautiful as Catherine Deneuve's desperate gaze, UMBRELLAS crashes headlong into our notions about romance. The film's breathtaking use of color and Michel Legrand's delightful jazz-infused score are worthwhile in and of themselves, but ultimately, the film's greatest asset is how true it seems, even as it turns against our hopes about love.
A must-see, especially if you think you'll hate it.
