Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Chris H — 10 Mar 2008
A sung-through French realist modern semi-opera - a most rare (almost unique) of creatures. And not a jazz-hand or soft-shoe in sight! Sparkling, witty and beautifully simple. A little sentimental and overly-romanticised, but even this old humbug of a reviewer was moved by the beauty of it all.
Great camerawork and absolutely startling technicolor (love that wallpaper!) make this an irresistible delicacy to be savoured.
