Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Kyle G — 02 May 2008
Irresistable, slightly childish, but intriguing in its ambition and seriousness. The first half -- an operatic, West Side Story-esque romance -- frequently wears out its welcome; you have to smile at its tricks (dazzling color, never-ending jazz, bouncy characters), but it can get tiring.
The second half evolves into a bleaker, more avant-garde story. It still has the same winking, dizzying charm, but it also develops a heavier, more satisfying aftertaste.
