Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Karen S — 16 Jan 2010
Engaging, poignant, and beautifully shot French 'sing-off', set in the key of love, and never once hinting at modulation. The sugar content may be too high for some, - I passed out twice - but somehow the story gets away with it, thanks in good measure to some truly touching performances. A non-stop musical dialogue, shot in an acid-trip dollsâ?? house, with Deneuve and Castelnuovo leading our cast of life-size figurines.
Be prepared for a discernibly unsweetened ending, though.
