Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Michael A Elkana F — 17 Mar 2010
Effortlessly brilliant musical where every word of dialogue is sung as opposed to having a normal plot with song + dance routines scattered throughout. The simplistic storyline is more than compensated by some dazzling use of colour, a wonderful soundtrack and some good singing too.
Catherine Deneuve has rarely looked better, and while the cinematic world of musicals remains terrain I have yet to fully explore, this will be hard to top in the musical section. C'est magnifique.
