Review of The Turin Horse (2011) by Tsz Yeung Yvonne P — 07 Jun 2011
The film is true to itself, and that's the main thing you have to give it credit for. The (magnificent) cinematography, (invisible) editing and (non-Bressonian Bressonian) performances are all strengths, as is the intensely minimal sound design.
Hypnotic, depressing. A shame it's a man's last film - to think that this was the main thing someone had left unsaid suggests untold optimism in the earlier works I haven't seen yet. The film's ending clearly caught most of its audience offguard-- many of us would have stayed for the right 'seventh day', I feel.
In a film festival, everyone will justify the choice later, but the room clearly didn't feel right about it at the time.
