Review of The Truman Show (1998) by Mesh B — 04 Aug 2013
What if you wake up one day and learned that the world as you know it is actually a reality show watched by millions of people? What if I told you that you are in fact, the world's most popular face?
Meet Truman Burbank, a happy-go-lucky insurance executive who lives in a cult-like small town, Seahaven, and lead a very charming life with his peculiar wife, Meryl. Truman begins his daily life in a routine manner; he wakes up, he greets his African American neighbor and off he goes to do his duty, where he comes home every night to his always smiling wife. Truman also socialize, where once in few days he will go and play golf on a bridge with his best buddy, Marlon.
Life seems to go well for Truman, until series of 'weird' incidents begin to take place - a light projector falls from the sky, the reappearance of his estranged father and strange messages picked up by his car radio static, while he was on the way to work.
Truman also have weird habit, where he would disappear to his basement and sit for hours, trying to reconstruct an image of a girl, Sylvia, whom he met at his university time, but later on moved away to Fiji island (as being informed by Sylvia's father).
After days of wonderment, Truman suspects uncanny commotions happening around him whenever he tries to leave his beloved hometown - traffic appearing and disappearing blocking the exits, nuclear gas leak or even a personal dilemma, where his mother fell very ill right after the disappearance of Sylvia.
Truman begins to suspect he is being watched and later on finds that his suspicion is not merely a paranoia episode, but in fact, a life-changing truth about his identity.
9.5/10.
