Review of The Tripper (2006) by Nolan M — 27 Oct 2007
I think this is a really fun slasher flick. It's got the typical conventions of a horror flick, with drugged up teenagers wandering the woods while a killer tears them apart. Suprisingly, the main characters are pretty likeable, especially Lukas Haas and Jaime King.
My favorite character is Thomas Jane. He's so funny, and also just plain likeable, he's the only level-headed person of all the characters. He doesn't give in to bullshit, but he's also got a nice wit.
Paul Reubens (although his part is small) is hilarious. "Fuck!...Uh huh...Uh huh...Fuck!...Uh huh... Uh huh...Fuck!" I like Jason Mewes, and he plays a similar character to Jay, although less juvenille, and more likeable (but still not as funny as Jay, of course).
The movie is pretty heavy politically, but it stays pretty unbiased. I can see people saying it's one way or the other, and I assume there's some undertone against George W., but it shows the hippies as idiots, and absent minded and criticizes the Republicans.
Overall though, I don't think it strays too far in either direction. It wasn't as funny as the first time I saw it, but I still think it's a really fun horror film that pays homage to it's ancestors and continues the tradition.
It's got good gore, and other exploitation elements (nude people, ha), and is just plain fun. I'd really like to see David Arquette do some more movies in the future.
