Review of The Tripper (2006) by Matt M — 27 Feb 2008
Unlike the concept, which is genius, this movie really falls flat. What's not to like about an hour and a half of hippie-killin'? Sadly - a lot.
First off, I was never sure what this movie was trying to be? Satire? Horror? Comedy? Drama? Not too sure.
The directing also felt very wishy-washy. I know it's David Arquette's first time at directing a feature film, so I could forgive the occasional cheesy drug-trip scene or the guitar playing that went on way too long, but there were too many things for me to not mention it.
The acting was also pretty terrible except for the keys. I actually wanted to see them all die a horrible death - and not the fun way like Friday the 13th films.
The killer, which was supposed to be the selling point was actually very weak. He mumbled his bad Reagan impression just loud enough for me to quit caring what he said in the first place.
Is there anything redeeming you might ask...YES! Four things:
1.) The Courtney Cox cameo. Hilarious.
2.) Thomas Jane kicking ass.
3.) The hippie massacre at the end. Funny as hell.
4.) Paul Reubens. Period.
Sadly, all of these things combined take up a total screen time of probably 30 minutes with most of them crammed into the 3rd act.
Overall, save your time and money. Or, if you somehow get the movie for free, just fast forward to the last 20 minutes. That's really the only part anyone needs to see.
