Review of The Tripper (2006) by Noel B — 14 Jul 2009
A killer in a Ronald Reagan mask axing hippies sounded like so much fun but it really, really isn't. The blame for this largely falls on the shoulders of writer/director David Arquette. I really don't know where to begin on the problems with this movie.
*inhales deep breath*.
It's politically satirical tongue in cheek stuff yet doesn't have anything to say; republicans are mocked, hippies are mocked, rednecks are mocked, every stereotype is mocked and there is no message or point.
Well surely that need not be the be all and end all; perhaps one can enjoy the movie as a mindless slasher film? Except there are no scares and the gore is tame. Well how about a comedy horror? Whilst the movie frequently attempts humour I only found two gags amusing and not funny enough to laugh out loud.
*inhales another deep breath*.
Furthermore, the scriptwriting is some of the worst in movie history. There are no characters just grossly unsubtle stereotypes. The dialogue is unconvincing and cringe worthy, especially when dealing with politics. It's an unengaging and embarrassing mess that has almost nothing to offer a viewer whatsoever.
I feel overly generous in giving it an entire star but credit where it's due: 1/2 a star for almost making me laugh on two occasions and 1/2 a star for at least attempting an original idea.
Some actors go on to write and direct great movies; others, like David Arquette, make it embarassingly apparent that they should stick to acting only.
