Review of The Triplets of Belleville (2003) by Anya S — 26 Jun 2010
Rarely does a film say so much with such little dialogue, let alone an animated film created for a mature audience (PG-13, anyway, but many of the finer points may be lost on younger viewers). Amazing storytelling through mostly pantomime, but the story remains interesting and keeps moving with humor, satire, action, and character development while sometimes subtly (and other times not so subtly) making many comments about society and humanity.
Very creative music and sound throughout, particularly with the use of nontraditional items to create the sounds, especially with the four ladies' performances.
Finally, the animation is superb and timeless. So many details and creative artfulness with nothing overlooked. (Funny little bonus after the credits, too.).
I can see why this won so much acclaim. It's an enjoyable film and something a little different than the typical animated mass-production dumbed-down money makers. Very much worth seeing.
