Review of The Triplets of Belleville (2003) by Trevor W — 25 Nov 2014
A mostly-silent French animated film that's a commentary (satire?) of big cities (corporate America?) following a grandmother as she searches for her son taken to the big city of Belleville to be used in an underground gambling ring. The title is the name of a trio of musician sisters that somehow find grandma playing music on a bike wheel under a bridge on the outskirts of Belleville.
Clearly bizarre, this film is filled with disturbing yet sometimes genius character design, as well as superb animation, background painting, and music. However, the story's numerous easy-to-fix plot holes and random slowing of the pacing greatly weaken the film.
