Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Sam D — 23 Mar 2014
I know that this film has passionate fans, but now I've seen it, I cannot claim to be one of them. I desperately wanted to love this film but, whilst I admire its ambition and visual flair, it left me more frustrated than enamoured.
Maybe I'm just being stupid, maybe I don't "get it"; I just found that Malick's creation buckled under the weight of its own ambition and poetry, maintaining its visual beauty throughout but losing its grip on any kind of human beauty, the kind of beauty which warms you, which inspires you, which scares you, which moves you. Without that, it felt very, very empty. Sorry, Malick fans.
