Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Amr M — 27 Jul 2012
He was in god's hands the whole time.
A family in Texas during the 1950s has two very different parents. The father is a disciplinarian that walks through life disappointed that he didn?t accomplish his life?s ambition in music. The mother is looser and has an appreciation for life and her family. The boys struggle adapting to each style while also dealing with tragedies within their family and neighborhood.
"Where were you? You let a boy die.".
Terrence Malick, director of A Thin Red Line, The New World, Bad Lands, Days of Heaven, and the upcoming To the Wonder and Voyage of Time, delivers Tree of Life. The storyline for this picture is really good but tries a little too hard at the beginning of this picture. The acting is outstanding and the cast contains Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn.
"The only way to be happy is to love.".
I was informed that I need to see more Terrence Malick pictures and decided to give this a shot. I really liked the majority of this film and just felt the analogies of the meaning of life and the use of alternate times and universes was overkill. The film and primary plot is outstanding and the acting is brilliant. Overall, I definitely recommend seeing this film but I would not add this to your DVD collection as you may only watch it once.
"Why did you first touch my heart?".
Grade: B.
