What do do you get when you pair a famous director with equally famous actors and beautiful cinematography? Well not much if it's Terrence Malick's Tree of Life. I have not seen a more pretentious art house pile of muck in a very long time.
Meaningless shots of oceans, dinosaurs and the cosmos somehow tell the story of a 1950's Texas family. Brad Pitt does his best Ward Cleaver on steroids impersonation and Sean Penn wanders around looking haunted and dissipated.
People speak in incomprehensible hushed tones and you are supposed to understand what is going on. Seems like an endless bad college movie school effort. Save yourself a headache and skip this mess. Two stars for visuals only.
