Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Cj W — 02 Aug 2013
The Tree of Life is probably my favorite film of all time. There are few films that achieve the broad vision of existence that Malick has with this film, only 2001: A Space Odyssey compares to it. The film is a study of how we understand our creator and in what ways we seek our fulfillment. But to look at the film most plainly, it is a story about a boy trying to reconcile his odd relationship with his father. However, Malick makes the film so much more than that, with the wonderful special effects that depict the universe's and life's beginning, and also, with his trademark beautiful cinematography of nature that he scatters sparce and poetic narration on top of. It is an enthralling film to just look at, but the dialogue is so scarce and poetic.
that it makes it the most intriguing and thought-provoking film I have ever seen. Although, this film is not meant for wide audience appeal, much like his other 5 films; it is very experimental, and you have to pay close attention, but I think everyone should give this film a viewing, because it truly is a remarkable achievment in cinema.
