Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Negro W — 25 Apr 2013
Heavily borrowing on imagery from Tarkovski's "Mirror" and Kubrick's "2001: A space oddyssey", The Tree of Life could have been great, and was close to being so. But Malick's irritating use of voiceovers and discovery channel images did not make it for me, despite the sublime cinematography, fully personal or fully transcendent.
Something in between, something unsure. Too didactic and meaning driven. Not discursive enough. A brilliant and flawed mess.
