Review of The Treatment (2007) by Robert B — 01 Dec 2007
A neurotic teacher (Eigeman) becomes involved with a socialite widow (Jannsen).
Hooray for self indulgent first time screenwriters. I mean really, without them we wouldn't have the whole Ethan Hawke "No one gives a shit about your shallow whiny angst" genre. The main character honestly analyzes literature for the majority of the movie that just seems to correspond to his own personal struggles. ahhhh. How quaint. I think the thing about the script that is the most pathetic is how the opening monologue tells the audience to let go and appreciate the character even if they can't identify with him. Not to judge him. We're then treated to him whining about how no one understands him for an hour and a half. It's painful. The direction is non-existent. The acting is bland, and the dialogue/analysis is surprisingly uninsightful, and i'm still trying to figure out what Famke Jannsen would see in an unnattractive closeted homosexual. There is no way that man would get within ten feet of a vagina.
Miss this one.
Oh. I also forgot to mention the trendy jazz lounge soundtrack. As if there wasn't enough pretense without that addition.
