Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Rebecca B — 20 Dec 2007
I came to this film belatedly. It was on TV one afternoon and I thought I'd just tune it in as background. I've always enjoyed John Huston's films (as actor and director), but I wasn't too sure I'd be terribly interested in what I thought was maybe a sort of dated and guy-oriented movie.
Well, it is guy-focused (all male cast) and its plot and themes ostensibly rather narrow--prospecting and treasure hunting--but this movie is so much more than that. After only a few minutes of it playing in the background while I was bustling around doing chores, I was sucked in, all housework forgotten.
The acting and direction is great, but what really got me was how this very specific plotline speaks so powerfully about...THE HUMAN CONDITION!!!
