They don't make films like this anymore. A superbly made adventure film which becomes a fascinating exploration of human madness and greed. Darkly funny and also tense and tragic, its amazing just how well this stands after 60 years, and it's easy to see why Paul Thomas Anderson was so inspired by this film, while making There Will Be Blood.
An American classic which will continue to resonate for many more years.
