When it comes to classic movies, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre holds its ground. It's a solid story with complex characters that make you shift loyalties on a dime. I spent most of the movie trying to guess what was going to happen next, and I love it when a movie can do that.
Hamlet may have won Best Picture in 1948, but I'd argue that The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was the best film of that year.
