Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Ted H — 08 Aug 2012
A fantastic cinematic classic, and a great study in how to corrupt a man's soul. Great direction by the legendary John Huston (who won an Oscar for Directing AND Screenwriting) shot on location in Mexico for added authenticity.
Superbly cast and played were Huston's father Walter as the grizzled old Howard, wiser than he initially seems; Tim Holt as the young, impressionable Curtin, and Humphrey Bogart as the down on his luck, at the end of his wits Fred C.
Dobbs. The film uses the backdrop of prospecting for gold in the mountains as a way to examine the character of men, and what they can be driven to do. Bogart's Dobbs is one of classic tragic figures in the history of film.
A must see, which clearly became the template for hundreds of later films. Essential.
