Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Tomas T — 20 Jan 2013
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is one of the best depictions of wealth's corrupting power ever. In parallel of being a terrific movie, the film also has a more educational side to which unravels through the two fortune hunters Dobbs (Bogart) and Curtin (Howard) going after the riches of untamed Mexican mountains.
The script and screenplay near perfection as ample screen time is given to each main characters to develop and portray how sudden wealth corrupts each one of them differentially. Humphrey Bogart deserves extra praise with his convincing portrayal of gold madden miner Dobbs - even if it goes somewhat overboard at times - , it is certainly one of the more interesting performances from the iconic actor. Story wise he film is fulfilled with quite unordinary plot twists which are surprising even after so many decades and make it timeless.
The Treasure of Sierra Madre investigates some of the fundamental aspects of human nature like greed and jealousy and depicts them in unforgettable manner, making it one of the best films ever produced in Hollywood.
