Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Ryan Gibbons — 18 Sep 2010
Here is a film that I really did not care for. It seemed to me that it sort of wanted to be a western but it just was not good enough to be just that. There are two Hollywood stars that are beloved and considered legends that I cannot stand.
One is Orson Welles, the guy was a mildly talented, arrogant fat ass who could not act his way out of a plastic bag. And the other is Humphrey Bogart, who I guess was considered to be a cool or tough guy, I was as shocked to hear that as I was to hear that people used to think John Wayne was a cool and tough guy.
This movie has some of the corniest dialogue in writing history, the acting is mediocre at best and the direction is incredibly lazy. The cinematography is constricted and the story is not even mildly interesting.
The characters are very one dimensional and just a bore to watch. The film might pretend to have some profound message but they pretty much spoon feed it to you, I don't wanna hear the bullshit about the time period, there were directors at the time making far more interesting films than this.
What a disappointment.
