Review of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) by Kevin R — 04 Dec 2012
I know what gold does to men's souls.
Two Americans scrounge around Mexico begging for money until they encounter a gold prospector that tells them tales of riches. The two American's get a little money and decide to invest it in the prospector's vision. Once they arrive in the Sierra Madre Mountains they hit it big and rake in some gold. But once they have the gold, greed sets in and the men turn on each other. Can they talk themselves down until they can sell the gold and part ways or will they go insane with greed?
"From now on you need to make your way through life without me.".
John Huston, director of The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, The Man Who Would be King, Annie, Prizzi's Honor, Casino Royale (1967), Key Largo, The Asphalt Jungle, and Moulin Rouge (1952), delivers The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The storyline for this picture is outstanding and contains wonderful characters that are delivered brilliantly. The cast delivers remarkable performances and includes Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt, Bruce Bennett, and Barton MacLane.
"You have to have a stomach for loneliness.".
I am a huge John Huston and Humphrey Bogart fan and was excited to see this coming up on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) recently. This immediately became one of my favorite Bogart pictures (top 3 for sure). He delivers a very gritty and eccentric performance that is captivating and dramatic. I strongly recommend seeing this masterpiece.
"The tiger must have dragged him off to his lair.".
