Review of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) by Matthew W — 17 Apr 2009
If you were a kid in the eighties, just the mention of this title should bring a nostalgia, whimsical grin to your face. Serving as a bridge between the second and third seasons of the animated show, this feature length film was basically an excuse to kill off most of the original characters and introduce new ones.
Nonetheless, Animated features don't get much better than this. Excellent animation, a killer 80's hair band soundtrack, and stellar voice acting from some pretty big name talent put this in the pantheon of animated greatness.
The fact that the combatants were robots as opposed to flesh and blood humans gave the animators the ability to really make the battles epic and brutal. Any kid who was a transformers fan in the eighties remembers how sad it was to watch many of their favorite autobots be destroyed in battle.
Even spoilers...................................Optimus Prime himself perishes in battle. Pretty deep stuff for a young kid to handle. Even now, after 22 years, this movie still holds a fond place in my heart.
The 2007 Bay film was great, but if you ever want to get back to the roots of the transformers mythos, check out his classic.
