Review of The Transformers: The Movie (1986) by Gordon B — 06 May 2014
Many that have reviewed this movie don't realize the history involved with it. This is the first time in an American animated series that they killed major characters from the series. The movie took 2 years to make and limits computer animation to effect shots ONLY.
Because of the reception of this movie Megatron was never made into a gun in future incarnations of the character. The death of Optimus Prime created a firestorm of controversy that still effects how animated properties are handled to this day.
Transformers was also among the first toy lines to receive a theatrical release. The success of the film made it possible for other toy lines to entertain the idea of making theatrical releases. Though the movie was made in the 80s it relies heavily on knowledge of the generation 1 Transformers animated series to truly understand why this movie completely changed face of the Transformers brand.
