Review of The Tracey Fragments (2007) by Nicholas D — 10 Oct 2008
Director Bruce McDonald uses a non standard visual style in an attempt to show the audience the fractured mind of the 15 year old lead Tracey. In some aspects it works quite well but after awhile it starts to feel like a film experiment that needed finer tunning. Itâ??s also around that moment the choice of visual style felt more like a wayto hide the fact there is no real meat to the story at hand.
The screenplay is a hollow one which has some really nice lines that are loosely being tied together. Itâ??s not all lost, cause it still an interesting experiment to watch.
The huge saving grace is McDonalds choice in casing Ellen Page who like a pro takes her two dimensional character and gives it some real depth, the rare moments were McDonald stop playing around with his editing and lets Page run with her performance are some truly emotional and tense scenes. Placing her amazing turn in this film alongside Juno and hard candy I can only say there is a very bright future for her.
Overall the movie is interesting with a great turn from its lead but lacking in any real substance.
