Review of The Tracey Fragments (2007) by Alberto M — 24 Oct 2008
A disjointed mess of a film that is savaged by an interesting use split screen and another strong performance form Ellan Page. The lack of a linear narrative structure means there is little arc to the story and no resolution to the plot, I suspect this was intentional.
The multi screen is used to a greater extent than in other films that use it. Nearly all the film is broken into multiple cells for nearly all the film. The change size shape and position on screen. The cells sometimes show multiple shots of the same image others they show different angle or parts of the shot, other times they show a different part of the storey.
The film is only 77 minutes long, this is very short but it is done for two good reasons. It took nine months to edit the fragments together. It is also exhausting to keep up with everything that is going on at once.
When the film was released in its native Canada the distributor released all of the original footage for fans to download encouraging them to re-edit the footage in whatever way they saw fit. The results varied hugely but included a complete version of the film in linear order and without the split screens.
