Review of The Toxic Avenger (1984) by Butterz B — 16 Sep 2010
Troma truely is a unique studio. They give us some of the worst movies ever, but they are so unbelievably good at the same time. For me, seeing THE TOXIC AVENGER was like watching THE EVIL DEAD, both are really bad, and we all know it, but the originality of the films and how much they can do on such a small budget is what really captivates us.
THE TOXIC AVENGER is about a nerdy mop boy named Melvin, whom falls into a barrel of toxic waste (convinetly left in the middle of the road with the lid off) and gets set on fire. He runs home like a little girl and starts to transform into Toxie, a horribly deformed mutant freak. Of course it is now up to Toxie to be a big hero that kills people in some of the most violent ways thinkable.
OK, so it sounds really bloody stupid and horrible. But it is insanely fun, and the endless amounts of cheese and gore makes you laugh non stop for the entire flm.
I purchased the R rated uncut edition released a few days ago, mainly because it promised the infamous 'head crushing' scene previously banned on DVD. Followed by some...strange sequels to say the least, THE TOXIC AVENGER is a classic, and is the best Troma has to offer. I also believe the famous "lets see if you have any guts" catch line originated in this movie. You can kind of guess what Toxie does after saying this.
