Review of The Tin Star (1957) by Mikey M — 29 Jun 2011
Disappointingly on-the-nose and predictable western from a director that I expect more from. It's wholly watchable for sure because of Fonda and some nice supporting roles, but the star is never stretched to his best or put to the sword the way Jimmy Stewart was in the best of Mann's work.
That usual challenged leading role is sort of jumbled here, as Perkins's hapless deputy is the one with the greater dramatic arc. This is Fonda's movie though and his character never seems in any real danger - as a result, the drama never reaches a suitable fervor.
