Review of The Time Traveler's Wife (2009) by Dc E — 07 Feb 2012

So yeah, this was melodramatic ... but I guess one can expect that going in.

The Time Traveller's Wife is about a man born with a rare gene of some sort that causes him to randomly go back and forth through time. Yeah, you shouldn't try and make sense of it ... and thankfully the writers don't either. The point of the movie is the relationship between himself and a Chicago artist and how they cope with him up and disappearing all the time.

I guess they could have dropped the sci-fi element and just made him like a travelling salesman or something, but that wouldn't have been as cool ... "The Travelling Salesman's Wife" ... hm, yeah ... doesn't reach out and grab you, does it?

Anyway, it wasn't bad. Despite being just a shade under two hours long, it felt a lot longer. I guess it was mostly because scenes kept repeating due to the main character's constant travelling.

My other real complaint is that Eric Bana seemed out of place in this movie. Typically, I like Bana and think he is a solid actor, but in this movie he mostly ran around with a sad or determined look on his face ... even in the love scenes. I half wanted to shout out "Why so serious?" ... :P.

The story idea is a good one and the ending is actually great. It is a somewhat touching movie that was definitely worth watching, but won't ever be in my DVD collection.

Lastly, Rachel McAdams did an excellent job in this. I usually think of McAdams as eye candy, but she showed some skill here. Good job, Rachel. Heh.
