Review of The Time Machine (1960) by Pete S — 01 Apr 2013
Watched this as part of Will's ongoing education in the classics. Still compelling. Will pointed out correctly that the movie works in specifics about WWI that the book couldn't possibly have had.
Found the parts with the Eloi were done better than the parts with the Morlocks. Obviously our hero spends more time with the Eloi, and the Morlocks are essentially just hideous monsters - could have been made more interesting by treating the Morlocks in more depth. The Morlocks actually have functional, albeit twisted, society and some positive characteristics could have added some pathos to the story. But then it would have been problematic to kill them all in the end.
Like all time travel stories it had its problems with causality, but it skirted them and moved on, which is my preferred method of dealing with essentially insurmountable dramatic problems.
Now we have to watch Time After Time!
