Review of The Tillman Story (2010) by Heather M — 25 Jun 2010
Anyone in the U.S. who is old enough to read the news has probably heard of Pat Tillman. Anyone who is not familiar with Pat Tillman is probably also ignorant about the fact that a black guy has been elected President of the United States.
Now as for the movie, Amir Bar-Lev, the director, investigates the mysteries of Pat Tillman's story. Due to the help and cooperation of the Tillman family and some other outstanding individuals, Bar-Lev is able to reveal to the rest of the world that once again the U.S. government and military can be quite untrustworthy. Bar-Lev also shows the incompetence of the people in charge of the country. One of the most memorable moments takes place at the court when some generals and Donald Rumsfeld clumsily lie in front of the Tillman family. Another thing to add is that, even though a lot of people already know about how deceptive the government can be, Bar-Lev's film has plenty of shocking revelations.
This film may appear to be very cynical and depressing (which it is), however, the movie also celebrates the life of a regular human. Bar-Lev is able to show how Pat Tillman was a good man without kissing his ass.
The movie is also inspirational because it shows that no matter how hard the government or any other big, faceless organization tries to manipulate citizens, there are plenty of people fighting back and making a difference. Plus, seeing the amount of care, loyalty and commitment the Tillman family has will warm anybody's heart.
