Review of The Tillman Story (2010) by Randy M — 11 Feb 2011
A great documentary that shows selfish cowardice and ass covering is as prevalent in the military as it is in the corporate world. As sad as this story is and seeing what a bright light Tillman was, I don't have a lot of sympathy for him or anyone who joins the US military these days.
The US used to go to war for good reasons such as stamping out cancers like communism/socialism (unfortunately, they still run rampant right under our noses in our university and college campuses). But today the US goes to war only because of money.
Anyone who doesn't understand this is too stupid to be given a gun. So anyone who joins the military is ultimately complicit in lining the pockets of pigs like Dick Cheney and Bush, even if soldiers are only pawns.
In the doc one of Tillman's fellow soldiers tells the story of how the two of them once watched at night as artillery rained down on Baghdad, prompting Tillman to remark "this war is so fucking illegal".
After Tillman got back from his first tour of duty oversea he was offered another lucrative NFL contract, but he would have to leave the military to do it. He chose to stay in the military and he was killed on his next tour by (to use one of the dumbest, oxymoronic terms ever) "friendly fire".
So the reason I don't have much sympathy for Tillman is he went back to Iraq even though he knew the war was wrong and simply a pre-text for making oil money and shitting all over the environment at the expense of thousands of American solider lives like Tillman's.
I can tell you if there was still a draft I'd rather go to jail than join the military.
