Anyone who's ever read the lovely book by Paul Gallico upon which this movie is based knows that it really isn't a children's story at all, and deals with extremely profound issues of loss and childhood trauma.
Still, it is one of the best of the Disney films and I've owned it for years. Immensely touching.
