Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Tim S — 16 Nov 2007
Holy shit, Guillermo Arriaga actually knows how to write!
Judging by the two movies of his that I've seen - this and "Babel" - he has three favorite themes: interconnectivity, culture-clash, and consequence. In "Babel", they all felt cheap and empty, but here the coincidences seem natural, the immigration messages are insightful, and the consequences have real, dramatic weight - we feel Pete's loss. Arriaga handles it so well that I came -this- close to crying; and that simply doesn't happen for most movies.
