Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Bradley B — 22 Mar 2008
This past year Tommy Lee Jones has given us two fantastic performances, one in No Country For Old Men and the other in In The Valley of Elah. When I was reading up on those two films a few months ago I came across this hidden gem that he not only stars in but also directed back in 2006.
This trio of films has given me a new found respect for Jones as an actor and a filmmaker. Burial is a gripping story of friendship between a cowboy (Jones) and a Mexican illegal immigrant he employs.
When his friend is killed by a reckless Boarder Patrolman played by Barry Pepper, Jones kidnaps him, forces him to dig up the body and help him take it back to Mexico for a proper burial. A modern day western that truly impressed me with its story.
And Jones impressed me equally as a director; I especially appreciate his confidence in allowing the audience to decipher the flashbacks as opposed to using some cheap fade away trick. Very well worth your time.
